Goopy Le Grande is one of the first bosses in Cuphead. He appears in Ruse Of An Ooze from Inkwell Isle One.

Boss Theme

Description

Appearance

Goopy is a blue slime with a small red nose. During Phase 2, he grows to double his normal size and he gains a pair of thick, brown eyebrows. In his final form, he manifests as an angry face on a grey gravestone with a cross on top, displaying the term "RIP" (Rest In Peace).

Personality

Goopy acts incredibly narcissistic and overconfident in combat, always commenting on how handsome he is, even as a gravestone, as seen in his death screen. However, he seems to hold respect for his opponents, as he makes a cap-tipping gesture using the top his head to Cuphead and Mugman in his opening animation. He also maybe seen to be tricky, as implied in how he uses a jellybean to grow big in Phase 2.

Battle

Intro

As the battle begins deep inside the forest, Goopy tips his "hat" (actually his scalp) to Cuphead and Mugman.

Phase 1

"With a face like mine is it a crime to be bouncing all the time?"

Hitpoints = 440/288/336

Goopy's few attacks in this phase are relatively simple:

  • Goopy simply bounces around the field, attempting to crush the player(s).
  • Goopy stops bouncing, pulls most of his body back, then lunges at the player(s) while morphed into a giant boxing glove.

Goopy's bounce can be avoided by moving around or dashing out of the way. He can also randomly take longer to bounce to mix up his rhythm. He has two type of jumps, one is lower and one is higher. When he hits the side of the screen while still ascending, he bounces off it and the arc continues in the opposite direction. When he hits the side while he is descending, he simply drops straight down, covering where dead spots in the corners would be if he always bounced off the side of the screen. In Simple mode, there is a longer delay between jumps, and he can only bounce with one jump pattern. In Expert mode, Goopy bounces much faster, with higher acceleration when jumping, and he falls faster.

The range of his lunge is relatively short, so the player(s) can dodge it easily by running or dashing away. Crouching underneath the attack also dodges it, while giving the player(s) an opportunity to shoot him point blank. He also automatically changes directions depending on where the player(s) is, and continues bouncing where he is facing afterwards. The telegraph duration of him pulling back increases and decreases in Simple and Expert mode respectively.

After taking enough hits, Goopy will eventually stop and swallow a jellybean. He then grows twice as large as his original form. He spawns three pink question marks while he transforms, which are crucial to getting an A-Rank or an S-Rank as they are the only objects in this boss battle that can be parried, and getting those ranks require you to parry at least three objects.

Phase 2

"I'm a handsome slime bringing pain -- one bounce at a time!"
Goopy Le Grande, Phase 2 Death Screen

Hitpoints = 560/540/560

In this phase, Goopy grows about twice as large after eating a jellybean[1] and gains some brown eyebrows. His slam covers more ground. He reuses his two previous attacks, but they are more powerful and harder to dodge to some extent:

  • Goopy still bounces around the field like before, but his larger size now makes him harder to dodge.
  • Goopy stops bouncing, dons a red boxing glove on his hand, pulls his arm back, and punches at the player(s).

He takes slightly more time to bounce than he did his smaller form. In Simple mode, there are now two different heights of jumps.

The range on his haymaker is longer than the one on his lunge. However, those punches are still avoidable when the player far enough, and if there is no way to escape, it is ideal to just duck and shoot at the same time. The first time he does this attack, he blinks a few times before the punch.

After taking enough damage, he will stop bouncing, dazed, and is soon crushed by a tombstone. On simple mode, the fight will end with him left feeling dizzy.

Phase 3

GoopyIcon3

"I'm very smashing... even in grave situations!"
Goopy Le Grande, Phase 3 Death Screen

Hitpoints = 372/504

In this form, Goopy only has one attack:

  • Goopy brings his tombstone down on the ground to try and crush the player(s).

Goopy can only be damaged if the face of the tombstone is shot. He can now only move by sliding from left to right, stopping momentarily to perform his slam, as he is in the background and unable to cause damage otherwise. Goopy usually goes by the players 2–3 times before going for the slam. In Expert mode, his tombstone slides across faster, slams down faster, and is generally less predictable, sometimes slamming after just one passage.

After taking enough damage, the tombstone is torn in half and wiggles while Goopy's inscription appears deceased.

Unused Content

In the unused code of the game, Goopy's final phase has minions that would run around to disturb the player(s). They are not the same as the Bothersome Blueberry in Forest Follies, but has similar behavior. Their HP is 3.9. They respawn every 3.4 seconds. In Expert mode, they respawn every 3 seconds. They are not very complete, when they get killed during a turning around animation. Since they still flash red when damaged, it is possible that they were removed after the demo in E3 2016.

In early gameplay, when Goopy Le Grande is defeated in his giant form, there is a smooth transition of him being knocked back with a painful expression and back to his dazed animation. It was scrapped in the final version but still exist in the codes. Now when he is defeated in that form, it cuts to the dazed animation immediately.

In the first trailer from late 2013, there were two Goopy Le Grandes after the trailer showing there is one at the start of the fight. Early designs for the fight probably had a phase in which Goopy would duplicate himself, requiring the players to dodge both of them as they jumped around. This was changed in the final product, and the phase is replaced by him growing bigger instead.

In the early beta versions, in his intro, Goopy Le Grande would be surprised when he makes eye contact with Cuphead and Mugman. This is strikingly similar to Sally Stageplay's second phase intro, in which Sally will appear surprised with her hands on her face while making eye contact with Cuphead. They both even have the lines which indicate the direction they are looking in.

Trivia

  • He is basically the tutorial to get players well acquainted with the dashing and ducking features.
  • His name, Goopy Le Grande, means Goopy The Great in Italian.
    • "Le Grande" is also a pun on "El Grande" (Spanish for "The Big") and "Le Grand" (French for "The Big").
  • Unlike most bosses, Goopy Le Grande does not appear in the good ending with all other debtors. He is seemingly killed, although Jake Clark later confirms the contrary.
    • He is also the second boss that does not appear in the good ending, with the first being The Root Pack, the third being Wally Warbles, and the fourth being Dr. Kahl's Robot. However, Wally Warbles and Goopy Le Grande have been confirmed by Designer Jake Clark to still be alive.
  • Goopy Le Grande is the only boss (besides Angel and Demon) in the game to never use any kind of projectile attack or minions to aid him.
  • His Regular and Expert Mode knockout animation appears to be a pun on the acronym commonly found on tombstones (including his own), "R.I.P.", which stands for the Latin phrase "Requiēscat In Pace", which translates to "May He Rest In Peace" in English. The knockout animation takes the acronym literally and has the stone actually ripping in half.
  • According to early sketches shown in an interview, Goopy Le Grande was originally going to be called "The Great Slime".
  • In the early concepts of the game, Goopy would've been fought after the player exited through the tutorial door.
  • Goopy originally had Honeycomb Herald as his battle theme rather than Ruse Of An Ooze.
  • Goopy's old death phrase was: "You were slimed! I guess you should try harder."

Inspirations and similarities

Goopy Le Grande's design are homages to the Slime, a common enemy and the mascot of Dragon Quest, and cartoons such as Ub Iwer's Balloon Land. Goopy eating a jellybean to grow larger is a nod to A Boy and his Blob.[1]

  • The background seems to resemble those in Disney films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi.
  • The way Goopy lunges in the form of a boxing glove in the first phase resembles an attack done by The Blob from ClayFighter.
  • His "Grave Danger" attack during his tombstone phase may be a reference to the Whomp enemy in the Super Mario franchise.
  • Some of Goopy's facial expressions in both his 1st and 2nd phases resemble Brom Bones' from the ComiColor Cartoon The Headless Horsemen. Likewise, his facial expression on his tombstone resembles those of the numerous animated tombstones in Swing You Sinners!, a 1930 Fleischer Studios cartoon that is referenced many times throughout the game.
  • His theme has a motif from the Punch-Out!! the soundtrack, specifically from Little Mac Down.
    • There's also references to the game in concept art.
  • There would be an attack that directly references Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! with his iconic winking attack, shooting his eyes right then would instantly knock him out. However, it did not made it into the final game. A remnant of it still exists when Goopy punches in Phase 2, where he would blink a few times the first time he uses that move.
